Mama: Caldo de Puerro

I made this chicken/leek soup tonight with instructions from 3,000 miles away!
Mom is in the motherland but she walked me through this successful 1st attempt at this surprisingly easy AND delicious cold weather favorite.

L.A.'s Favorite Desserts

KCET's food blog has won over my heart entirely with a list of items in my favorite food group: dessert!

Not only did one of my company's top clients make it to the top of KCET's favorite Los Angeles desserts (Go MoChI!), but I couldn't agree more with the following statement:
Angelenos are a dessert people. We like sugar and we like dairy, and we love it when the two are combined.

Mama: Repollo con Chorizo

A simple but extremely tasty recipe brings me closer to cabbage, which I usually find pretty boring.

Mama's tip: "When you use Chorizo just steam the cabbage and mix it in but if you use other ground meats, use bay leaf and thyme to give it that strong flavor."

Breakfast: Eureka Cafe

Although this place opens only on weekends, it has short hours, it can be short staffed and its not super consistent (sorry guys!) -- its AH-MAZING when they get it right and you get to spend a whole morning there. The defintion of a family-run restaurant, the whole family works all sections, from the back of the kitchen to the front door.

The picture below is of a red velvet waffle with the perfect cheesecake-y butter or frosting and the freshest berries from the Wellington Square Farmers Market down the street. Drooool. Bring your lap top and / or your pooch and just come enjoy your cup of coffee European style - slowly.

Mama: Chiles Chapines

Have you ever had Guatemalan Chiles Rellenos?

Mama stuffs this delicious, deep-fried goodness (and did I mention super time-consuming?) with pork but has started making them with shredded chicken lately. She says it's for health reasons but I suspect she just does it to please her son in law. And he approves 100%. :)
