Mama: Caldo de Puerro

I made this chicken/leek soup tonight with instructions from 3,000 miles away!
Mom is in the motherland but she walked me through this successful 1st attempt at this surprisingly easy AND delicious cold weather favorite.

L.A.'s Favorite Desserts

KCET's food blog has won over my heart entirely with a list of items in my favorite food group: dessert!

Not only did one of my company's top clients make it to the top of KCET's favorite Los Angeles desserts (Go MoChI!), but I couldn't agree more with the following statement:
Angelenos are a dessert people. We like sugar and we like dairy, and we love it when the two are combined.

Mama: Repollo con Chorizo

A simple but extremely tasty recipe brings me closer to cabbage, which I usually find pretty boring.

Mama's tip: "When you use Chorizo just steam the cabbage and mix it in but if you use other ground meats, use bay leaf and thyme to give it that strong flavor."

Breakfast: Eureka Cafe

Although this place opens only on weekends, it has short hours, it can be short staffed and its not super consistent (sorry guys!) -- its AH-MAZING when they get it right and you get to spend a whole morning there. The defintion of a family-run restaurant, the whole family works all sections, from the back of the kitchen to the front door.

The picture below is of a red velvet waffle with the perfect cheesecake-y butter or frosting and the freshest berries from the Wellington Square Farmers Market down the street. Drooool. Bring your lap top and / or your pooch and just come enjoy your cup of coffee European style - slowly.

Mama: Chiles Chapines

Have you ever had Guatemalan Chiles Rellenos?

Mama stuffs this delicious, deep-fried goodness (and did I mention super time-consuming?) with pork but has started making them with shredded chicken lately. She says it's for health reasons but I suspect she just does it to please her son in law. And he approves 100%. :)

Soup & Salad

It's been awhile since I visited Soup Plantation! While the soup and salad selection is typically wide, what I love here is the carb-licious pasta, breads (can I get a witness for wheat bread w/honey whipped butter?) and desserts.

:) Yeep!

Sweet, Sweet Friday

I started out my lunch with a naturally sweet salad made from extra ripe fruit I had at work. It would not have made it through the weekend, but that's why it was so deliciously sweet!

Then, after browsing through a super adorable gift shop on Holly Street, I made a quick stop at Violet's Cakes en route to Subway.

I fell in love with their rotating seasonal selection of cupcake flavors and their mini versions! They're the perfect bite size to accompany my not-nearly-as-exciting Veggie Delight sandwich. And the adorable, little red velvet cupcake just melts in your mouth!

And they do weddings.... Stay tuned.

Lunch: Roscoe's House of Chicken & Waffles

Ty is the best.

But not as great as the waffle/cheesy eggs/gravy potatoes tray he brought with him.

Location, location. This is why my new job will drive me to obesity.

Lunch: Mama's Tamales

Mama always knows what's good and good for you.

Had the chicken mole tamale in banana leaf, partially because that's what my mom uses to wrap her tamales. Although it was a little dry (my mom says it's probably because they didn't cook the masa before wrapping the tamales), the chicken was tasty and the mole was spread through most of the inside.

The combo came with a tortilla soup bowl. The red broth was clearer than I expected but it was rich. The chunky tomato and peppers seemed as if they were dropped in the hot soup just before serving to retain their crunchiness. I found cheesy chunks at the bottom and the crispy nacho-like strips floating around disintegrated pretty quickly. Oh, and the serrano suckers that tried to sneak into my spoon constantly... they kicked the heat up a notch. :)

The cafe is the result of a training program that helps street vendors transition from the informal business sector (Which is huge in L.A, might I add and I'd love for somebody to study this "underground" economy that is never included in economic assessments) into micro-enterprises.

Lunch: Mr. Ramen

I could take up residency in Mr. Ramen's bowl.

The flavorful broth and slurp-tastic noodles make you want to curl up in there next to the boiled egg while floating on the super soft pork(?) chop.

The half curry rice/regular ramen combo is perfect for the indecisive. The rice is just fluffy and sticky enough to dip into the delicious pool of curry surrounding it.

Great for a cool day but just as fantastic on a warm Monday in July.

To Do: Carnitas + Cabernet = East LA Meets Napa

Putting this on my to-do list next year. Sounds like a great pairing for a good cause. Proceeds went to Altamed, a nonprofit that provides critical services such as HIV/AIDS care and senior services in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Carnitas and Cabernet Converge as East LA Meets Napa Celebrates the Cuisine of Michoacan: "AltaMed hosted the sixth annual East LA Meets Napa, one of the nation's most unique festivals that celebrates the Latino community's contributions to California's multi-billion dollar food and wine industry. The event pairs Latino- owned or operated wineries from the Napa Valley with Latino-owned or operated restaurants from the greater Los Angeles area."

Recetas de Mama

"Recetas de Mama" is a special branch of My Delicious Hobby where I will showcase some of my favorite dishes made by my dear mom.

My entire life she has called me into the kitchen in her unsuccessful attempts to show me how to cook. She jokes that a husband of mine would yell at her for not teaching me the ways of the stove. I tell her a husband of mine would cook for me if he wants my love. :)

This section will be a tribute to the gossip, emotional rollercoasters, countless hours and... oh, right... the food we've shared in the kitchen with dear Mama.
